“Mendocino’s Colorful Grays: Every day on the coast has its own unique beauty, no matter what the weather. An overcast and somewhat gloomy start to my painting day evolved into a wonderful session of studying the myriad colors in the rocks and vegetation at this perfect spot on the Mendocino coast. I’ve painted this scene in full sunlight, with crashing waves and shimmery light, but the peaceful feeling that the overcast skies created and the subtle changes in the temperature and saturation of the colors made this painting session even more intriguing to me. Plein air painters have to take what the day has to offer, and there’s beauty in every scene if you just open yourself up to it”– Kathleen Dunphy
