Excerpts from an interview with Julyan Davis:
Who are the characters? They seem symbolic.
The main characters (the ‘ghosts’) are three women from three moments of American history. My first inspiration, Betsy, was based on ‘Sweet Betsy from Pike’. She represents the fortitude and optimism of the pioneer. Nancy, the circus strongwoman from the Texas dustbowl, symbolizes the vigor of the New Deal- she’s eager to fix everything for everyone. Belle, well, I suppose she represents what first brought me to the South- the gothic drama! That culture of honor that came from the old country. Very proud, easily slighted. Three types of strong women.
My son Finn is a character with his friend Cece. There’s the boxing kangaroo that Nancy rescues from the ring, and even the very last buffalo. Others will join the party. In the shape of a confused robot, they will meet the future.
