Nancy Was Less Confident

‘The Exodusters’ Nancy Bates’s journal

July 5th, 1935

The Australian lost again. First round. I don’t think he laid one punch. It bothers me to see him try so hard, each time thinking he has a chance. If I see it again, well, I don’t know what all I’ll do. Nancy, they tell me, stop trying to save everyone. I’m not. Nobody can save anybody, but if it happens again I’m taking that poor rube out of the ring myself. Pick him up, tail and all, and carry him out of here.
