After almost 20 years, West Fraser has returned to the streets

Almost 20 years after the University of South Carolina published Charleston In My Time, West Fraser has once again turned his easel towards the city streets of Charleston, South Carolina. To be fair, Mr. Fraser has continued to paint in around the city of Charleston, but the paintings have been few and far between. In this time of change, West has once again taken to the streets to document vanishing Charleston—from the city streets to the coastal marshes.

Mr. Fraser has been lauded for his ability to capture the light and creating a sense of place “I like for the viewer of the picture to feel in the scene, on the ground, in the place. I want the viewer to feel the temperature, smell the smells.” In this latest collection West has taken his many years of painting en plein aire and returned to the studio in order to expand the size of his canvases. As Southern writer Clyde Edgerton wrote of West’s work ‘it’s not sentimental or pretentious in the least, because the paintings feel relaxed and alive, they seem to gently love the light in them.’

For the May 3rd CGA artwalk West Fraser will be exhibiting several new street scenes which have been completed in the last year along with several new Lowcountry landscapes. For those that follow his work, we may also have one of his elusive night scenes or rooftop—these paintings are not generally on the open market but by commission only making this an excellent opportunity for collectors of Southern artists.

New Southern landscapes from Julyan Davis will be rounding out this exhibit.

Join us on May 3, 2019 between 5-8pm to view new paintings from West Fraser and Julyan Davis.
