Biography

Sallie Reynolds Allen

Working in neighborhood studios wherever her graphic design career took her, Sallie has been collaborating with amazing artists in Colorado and up and down the California coast for over 20 years. She moved back to Charleston, SC, to be near family, and has a studio on upper King Street.

While her pieces have generally been simple yet refined, Sallie’s style has evolved over time. Much of her current work is inspired by her late mother’s passion for gardening and their shared fondness for unique flora. A number of the vessels are subtly reflective of the native flora in her one-time home of San Diego, where the plants grow large and often take whimsical forms. Sallie’s love of Japanese flower arrangements is also evident in her elegantly curved ikebana vases. Her asymmetrical illustration style embraces each piece, while often breaking away from the form.

Sallie’s ceramic pieces are all made from porcelain, combining the techniques of wheel throwing with hand application to create an embossed, debossed or etched effect. Each piece is finished in a subtle matte or gloss glaze.
