Mother,
It is preposterous that you say I am leaving the regiment to pursue a man. If you have in mind the person I think, I do not even know his name. Nor do I care to know it, or him. You have entirely mistaken the few observations I made about a stranger’s rudeness, which were made to you in confidence, I might add, and certainly not meant for father’s ear.
