William R. Davis Jr: Modern Maritime

Charleston, S.C. October 4, 2024 Helena Fox Fine Art is proud to announce renowned marine artist William R. Davis, Jr. will be here for an exhibit of his artwork. From his meticulous oil paintings of historic marine vessels to his highly atmospheric landscapes, Davis strives to make his work accessible to those with a variety of tastes.

Mr. Davis burst onto the artistic scene in 1987 with a sold out show at the prestigious Mystic Maritime Gallery in Mystic, Connecticut. Sacred ground for artist who aspired to be known among the great maritime artists. His reputation has continued to grow throughout his career with honors from the Salmagundi Club in New York City, the Guild of Boston Artists, Copley Society, as well as the Art Renewal Center Salon.

Much of Davis’ early works pays homage to 19th century artists such as James Bard, Martin Johnson Heade, Antonio Jacobsen and Fitz Hugh Lane.  He limits himself to about 30 colors in the palette of that period. He describes his style as “A conglomerate of a number of ideas I saw in other artists with my own refinements”. Over the years, he has incorporated his fascinations for the different techniques of these artists. This may be best explained in the works of painter, William Merritt Chase, prominently displayed in his studio, “The most original painters are those who have stolen here a little and there a little from everyone. When they arrive a the levels of the masters, they will find they can do so much better work themselves that they can’t help being original”.

The exhibition, running from October 4th through October 21st, will highlight his skilled marine subjects—from views of his home ports of Cape Cod  to historic interpretations of iconic South Carolina landmarks such as the Morris Island Light along with his moody seascapes and landscapes.

We invite you to join us to welcome William R. Davis, Jr. to South Carolina during our artist reception on October 4, 20024 from 5-8pm as part of the Charleston Gallery Association First Friday Artwalk. All ages welcome! Art enthusiasts encouraged.
